CitiCar/CommutaCar Speed
| Nu-Kar has received a common
question concerning speed and range deficiencies in the Citicar/CommutaCar electric
vehicles. These cars were designed to go 38 MPH on level ground with an average charge
over 40 miles. If you are not getting this kind of performance, you have a problem. Many
calls to the Nu-Kar Electric Vehicle Division of Assembled Products The stock answers go something like:
- Check the brakes. Are they releasing properly? What about the
"Emergency brake? Is the interlock switch out of adjustment or missing?
- You have done the "one hand rolling test"?
Honestly, now. Even a slight drag will kill the top end speed and what it does to range is
criminal.
- How about the battery/motor cable connections (see the
article on our web site about how to test them)?
- And about the batteries, what condition are they in? It may
be time to get out the ol' hydrometer!
With all the cars we have worked on, they
have all come on trailers. I'm bettin' that unless you live in Sebring, Florida, your car
has been on a trailer at some point. It has been tied down securely for its' trip.
Usually, the front tie-down is wrapped around the front axle AND (accidentally) the
tierod! The tie rod is pinched to the axle. Okay, it springs back almost straight, but it
is not! If you are not getting the performance advertised, consider a front end alignment.
It may be the difference between 25 MPH and 38 MPH.
